Shame on Us

-

 We have vilified acceptance 

and fueled hate 
We have stomped on tolerance 
and empowered  shame 
We have demonized empathy
and romanticized apathy
We have propped up standards 
and smashed patience to pieces
 
Spewing half baked moral codes is the new high
But morality does not supersede wellbeing
Ideology cannot override humanity 
Simplicity is no substitute for nuance 
Right and wrong is never black and white 

So shame on us 
For pretending otherwise
Shame on us 
For driving one another to resentment
Shame on us 
For teaching our kids to aspire to perfection
Shame on us 
For knowing we are better; and failing to be
