Shame on Us

We have vilified acceptance  and fueled hate  We have stomped on tolerance  and empowered  shame  We have demonized empathy and romanticized apathy We have propped up standards  and smashed patience to pieces   Spewing half baked moral codes is the new high But morality does not supersede wellbeing Ideology cannot override humanity  Simplicity is no substitute for nuance  Right and wrong is never black and white  So shame on us  For pretending otherwise Shame on us  For driving one another to resentment Shame on us  For teaching our kids to aspire to perfection Shame on us  For knowing we are better; and failing to be

Two concepts ,one Philosophy

Modern work Also known as careers, professions Time-consuming, mind-numbing jobs Otherwise intelligent humans Slumped in bizarre postures Sore eyes , bloated brains  With a cascade of to-do lists Neatly presented on virtual calendars  Hours translated into productivity  productivity repackaged as worth  worth translated to wealth The deadly concept modernized  with a fancy vocabulary: purpose   Decades-long lives dedicated to purpose Modern fashion Also known as trendy, elegant Drab, provocative pieces of clothing Absurd fabrics sown together fabrics labelled outfits  Presented on awkwardly shaped beings  awkwardly shaped beings labelled models  Models polished with inorganic products  Inorganic products labelled makeup  Two concepts, one philosophy: illusion.

Reflection

When we look back at our lives, however far back - we tend to do so with melancholic remorse. We agonize over the choices we made, or failed to make -with a familiar critical tone that we have been socialized to address ourselves with. We ponder what could have been- if we had pushed a little harder, put in a bit more effort or just submitted that long shot application. For context, I am typing this from the light of my keyboard at a very late hour on a week day. So part of me feels like I should be fast asleep, lest I miss my alarm tomorrow and move through the day feeling like I got hit by a ton of bricks. But another part has been ruminating on this thought for a while now, and often in the wee hours of the night. So here it finally is- not in short, poetic lines like I love to arrange most of my other thoughts for you ; but in long, prosaic and (as you will notice) meandering form. Still, I want you to take a moment and soak it in, even if the statements I make sound cliched ...

THE ART OF SELF ACCEPTANCE

Dearest reader, As a kid , I hardly ever kept up or  matched my play friends' energies. I found the prospect of playing out in the sun till lunch exhausting and unfair. "Why are kids supposed to play all morning then spend the afternoon napping?" I once complained to mum, "because that's what kids do" she quipped; matter-of-factly. I believed her, although that did little to alleviate my dread every weekend morning, otherwise known as playtime. Years later, I have understood (and barely made peace with) an unfortunate fact about me. I am not wired to enjoy or be good at athletics and ball games-- especially ball games. My limb coordination is non-existent, and seeing me kick or throw a ball is a comic endeavor. While it may seem irrelevant at this point in my life (I am unlikely to ever get a job rejection because I could not throw a ball in a basket, for instance) ,it was not always like that. In a society that dictates athleticism and machoism as a core pi...
